Wild Turkey Distillery

Est. 1869
Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Jimmy Russell is 70 years into working at what is now known as Wild Turkey, making him the longest-tenured spirits Master Distiller in the entire world. He walked through the distillery doors on September 10, 1954, at age 18, sweeping floors, and never left. By the 1960s, he'd become Master Distiller, and he's been the creative force behind Wild Turkey bourbon ever since. His philosophy is simple: don't change a damn thing. While other distillers were chasing lighter, softer spirits in the 1970s and 80s, Jimmy stuck to his pre-Prohibition style bourbon—full-flavored, unapologetic, high-proof. His son Eddie Russell joined him in 1981 and became Master Distiller alongside Jimmy in 2015. They're the only active father-and-son duo of Master Distillers in American bourbon. Jimmy is a Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame member and a Whiskey Hall of Fame member. The distillery itself sits atop Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg, positioned perfectly to use the natural limestone-filtered water that runs through the area. Wild Turkey was originally established by the Ripy family (James Ripy founded the distillery around 1869), but the brand name and the bourbon style we know today came from Austin Nichols in the 1940s. The story goes that a group of Austin Nichols executives went hunting for wild turkeys, liked the bourbon they were drinking so much they decided to name their whiskey after the trip. The Wild Turkey 101 became the flagship, and the 101 proof became legendary. Jimmy Russell's philosophy of never watering down—never compromising—turned Wild Turkey into a bourbon lover's bourbon. The distillery today is a visitor-focused operation with the Jimmy Russell Wild Turkey Experience, featuring tours, tastings, indoor and outdoor bars, and a retail experience. It's one of the most modernized visitor centers on the bourbon trail while maintaining the working distillery atmosphere.
