Jim Beam Distillery

Est. 1795
Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Master Distiller · Fred Booker Noe III (7th generation); Freddie Noe (8th generation, appointed 2020s)

The Jim Beam dynasty is one of bourbon's most storied family sagas, stretching back nearly 230 years. Jacob Beam, a German immigrant farmer, started distilling whiskey around 1795 in Washington County, Kentucky, selling his first barrels of corn whiskey as "Old Jake Beam." That single decision launched a legacy that would eventually dominate American bourbon production. The Beam family survived the railroad era by strategically moving their operation to Nelson County, positioning themselves near railroad lines to ship whiskey nationally—a move that transformed them from local producers into national brands. Then came Prohibition: a catastrophe that wiped out countless distilleries but not the Beams. In 1933, at the age of 70, Jim Beam rebuilt the family distillery in just 120 days using the same yeast strain he'd painstakingly recreated. That yeast—allegedly caught from his back porch one night during Prohibition—is still used today in every bottle of Jim Beam bourbon. It's the kind of detail that separates myth from reality, and the Beams have always leaned into it. Today, Jim Beam produces nearly half the world's bourbon. The distillery sits in Clermont, Kentucky, just 30 minutes from Louisville, and represents an empire built on consistency, innovation (Booker Noe pioneered the "small batch" category in the 1980s), and an unbreakable family commitment to the craft. Eight generations of Beams have made bourbon at this location—a record unmatched in American whiskey.

  • The Legendary Yeast:: Jim Beam caught wild yeast from his back porch during Prohibition and rebuilt the entire distillery using it. The family still takes yeast cultures home on weekends as a backup, just in case.
  • Seven Generations on Record:: The Beam family has been distilling since 1795 (with only Prohibition as a gap). Fred Noe III is the seventh generation; his son Freddie is the eighth.
  • Small Batch Pioneers:: Booker Noe invented the "small batch bourbon" category in 1987 with Booker's—uncut, unfiltered, straight from the barrel. Before that, no one bottled bourbon this way.
  • Half the World's Bourbon:: Jim Beam produces approximately 50% of all bourbon globally, making it the world's best-selling bourbon for decades running.
  • Newcomer Bourbon Hall of Famer:: Fred Noe was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2013—but as only the 10th of 11 Beam family members to receive that honor, highlighting the dynasty's dominance.
  • The Beam Cousins:: The Beam name has spread across multiple distilleries through family branches. Jim Beam's first cousin, Joseph L. Beam, became the original master distiller at Heaven Hill.
