Heaven Hill Distillery

Est. 1935
Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Master Distiller · Denny Potter (current)

Heaven Hill's origin is pure American grit-and-luck. In 1935, just after Prohibition ended, brothers Ed, George, and Joel Shapira—ambitious young businessmen from Louisville with zero distilling experience—made an audacious bet. They secured investment, built a brand-new distillery in Bardstown, and released Old Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond. No inventory. No warehouses. No track record. Within months, it became Kentucky's best-selling whiskey. The gamble paid off immediately. For nearly 60 years, Heaven Hill grew quietly, building an empire of beloved brands—Elijah Craig, Old Fitzgerald, Larceny, Henry McKenna. Then came November 7, 1996: one of bourbon's darkest days. A fire started in aging warehouse I during a severe storm with 75 mph winds. The flames spread like wildfire through the wooden warehouses, consuming seven structures and over 90,000 barrels—roughly 2% of the world's whiskey supply. "Flames leapt hundreds of feet into the air. Witnesses reported barrels exploding and rocketing across the sky like shooting stars." The loss: $30 million. But Heaven Hill refused to surrender. Competitor distilleries—Jim Beam and Brown-Forman—stepped in to help with production capacity while Heaven Hill rebuilt. By 1999, they'd acquired and adapted the historic Bernheim distillery in Louisville, expanding further. Today, Heaven Hill is America's largest family-owned bourbon distillery, producing more Bottled-in-Bond whiskey than any other American distiller. In 2025, they broke ground on a brand-new $135 million distillery in Bardstown—a full-circle homecoming 30 years after the fire.

  • The 1996 Fire:: Nearly destroyed an entire company overnight. Over 90,000 barrels (7.7 million gallons) burned. The sky lit up orange for miles. Yet they survived through sheer determination and industry support.
  • Largest Family-Owned Distillery in America:: The Shapira family has owned and operated Heaven Hill since 1935—no corporate buyout, no public shareholders.
  • Started with Nothing:: The Shapiras had no whiskey inventory, no brands, no warehouses when they opened in 1935. Their first release became Kentucky's #1 seller almost immediately.
  • All Master Distillers = Beam Family:: Every Head Distiller at Heaven Hill since founding has been a member of the Beam family—continuing a dynasty across multiple distilleries. Joseph L. Beam (Jim Beam's cousin) was the first.
  • Bottled-in-Bond Leaders:: Heaven Hill produces more Bottled-in-Bond bourbon than any other American distiller—a testament to quality and tradition.
  • 2025 Homecoming:: After 30 years at the Bernheim location, Heaven Hill began on-site barrel filling at their new Heaven Hill Springs Distillery in Bardstown in April 2025, returning to their roots.
