Four Roses Distillery

Est. 1888
Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Master Distiller · Brent Elliott (current)

Four Roses is a bourbon with a romantic origin story that feels more like fiction than fact. Paul Jones Jr. was a successful whiskey broker in Louisville in the 1860s, and legend has it that when he proposed to a Southern belle, she replied that if her answer was "yes," she would wear a corsage of four roses to a grand ball. She showed up wearing four roses, and Jones was so taken with the moment that he named his bourbon Four Roses. Whether true or not, the story stuck—it's the kind of origin story bourbon wishes all its brands had. Jones trademarked the Four Roses name in 1888, making it official, and went into business selling it out of a Whiskey Row office in Louisville. In 1922, he purchased the Frankfort Distilling Company, securing bourbon production rights during Prohibition by obtaining a medical whiskey license—one of the few bourbon brands that survived the dry years. After Prohibition ended, Four Roses quietly became a foundational part of American bourbon history. The distillery building in Lawrenceburg is architectural evidence of Four Roses' ambitions. Built in 1910 with Spanish Mission-style architecture (red tile roofs, yellow stucco, arched windows), it's the only bourbon distillery in Kentucky using this style. The choice was deliberate: Four Roses wanted to signal sophistication and premium quality, distancing themselves from the rough "moonshine" image of Kentucky bourbon. It worked. The distillery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Four Roses uses a unique production method: two mash bills combined with five proprietary yeast strains, creating 10 distinct bourbon recipes. When bottling an expression, they blend different combinations of these 10 recipes to achieve specific flavor profiles. This formula-based approach to bourbon is unlike any other major distillery. In 2002, Kirin Brewery purchased Four Roses and doubled down on quality, pulling the brand out of the US market briefly to focus on continuous quality improvement before relaunching with new expressions. Today, Four Roses is a quality-focused operation known for consistency and thoughtful production.
