Copper & Kings American Brandy Co.

Est. 2014
Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Copper & Kings was born in 2014 when South African beverage entrepreneur Joe Heron decided to make American brandy in the heart of bourbon country—a deliberate provocation. While Kentucky obsesses over bourbon, Heron asked: "What if we made the world's best brandy here?" He chose the Butchertown neighborhood of Louisville specifically for its gritty, authentic character and proximity to the bourbon infrastructure he could repurpose for brandy production. What emerged is one of the most **genuinely unusual distilleries in America**. Copper & Kings produces no bourbon—zero. Instead, they distill grape brandy, apple brandy, gin, absinthe, and liqueurs in copper pot stills, aging spirits in used bourbon barrels (Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace, etc.) specifically because those barrels give American character to European spirit categories. The philosophy: leverage Kentucky's bourbon heritage (used barrels) to create distinctly American versions of traditionally European spirits. The most distinctive element of Copper & Kings' operation is their **sonic aging** process—five strategically placed subwoofers continuously blast music (David Bowie, Ice Cube, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.) throughout the barrel-storage cellar. According to Joe Heron, the music creates "pulsation" that moves the brandy away from speaker pulse and back again, increasing barrel-wall contact and accelerating flavor development. It sounds absurd. The science is debatable. The spirits are legitimately excellent. In 2025, after being acquired by Constellation Brands in 2020, Copper & Kings was purchased back by a newly-formed spirits company (Bourdon Spirits LLC), returning to independence. This kind of trajectory—major corporation acquisition followed by re-independence—suggests serious industry respect and founder confidence that the distillery's brand and philosophy are genuinely valuable.

  • Only brandy distillery in bourbon country: — zero bourbon production; intentional contrarian positioning
  • Sonic aging with subwoofers: — five strategically placed subwoofers blast music (David Bowie, Ice Cube, Jerry Lee Lewis) through barrel room 24/7 to accelerate aging through pulsation
  • Butchertown location: — gritty, authentic Louisville neighborhood (formerly industrial); part of craft-spirits cluster with Rabbit Hole, other distilleries
  • Joe Heron's track record: — founded Nutrisoda (sold to PepsiAmericas 2006), Crispin Cider (sold to MillerCoors 2012), now Copper & Kings; serial beverage entrepreneur
  • Used bourbon barrels for brandy aging: — leverages Kentucky's bourbon infrastructure to create American-style brandy with bourbon barrel character
  • Acquired by Constellation Brands 2020, re-acquired by Bourdon Spirits 2025: — suggests strong brand value and industry respect
  • Rooftop bar + tasting room: — modern facility with views, event space, sophisticated atmosphere (not a party destination)
  • Non-chill filtered, no added sugar/boise/synthetic chemicals/caramel coloring: — purist production philosophy
  • Batch distilled in copper pot stills: — premium production method emphasizing craft and character over efficiency
