The Old Jett Brothers Bourbon is named in honor of the Jett Bros. Distilling Co, which was located in Carrollton, Kentucky, about 10 miles from where the Neeley Family Distillery stands today. The Jett Bros. Distilling Co., also known as the Richland Distillery (after their flagship brand), operated from the 1880s up until Prohibition. At their peak, they produced around 30 barrels per day. In addition, the Jetts were instrumental in the development of Carrollton. The essentially brought electricity to the city and also built a bridge across the Kentucky River to Prestonville. In addition, James Jett, the company president, also built the Carrollton (Richland) Opera House and started the Carrollton Leaf Tobacco Warehouse Company, bringing both the arts and additional jobs and revenue to the city of Carrollton.

So what about the new The Old Jett Brothers bourbons? They are a line of finished bourbons, all of which start with Neeley Family Distillery bourbons as their base. This first release consists of 7 single barrels, each with different finishes, and including a barrel selected by Revival Vintage Bottle Shop. The Revival bottle ($189.99, available at the shop) is 4 year old Wheated Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery and then finished for 14 months in a French Chateau Rieussec Sauternes barrel. Furthermore, that finished bourbon just won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The full line is available at Neeley Family Distillery.

The Old Jett Brothers Single Barrel Finished Bourbons

• 5 year old Wheated Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. It was then finished for 7 months in a Turkish Apricot Brandy Barrel
• 5 year old Wheated Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. Then finished for 9 months in a Barbados rum barrel
• 5 year old high rye Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. Then finished for 7 months in a Portuguese Madeira wine cask
• 5 year old High Rye Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. It was then finished for 14 months in new Toasted French Oak
• 5 year old High Rye Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. It was then finished for 7 months in a French Oak Cognac cask.
• 4 year old high rye Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. It was then double barreled for 14 months in a new charred French Oak barrel
• 4 year old Wheated Bourbon distilled by Royce Neeley at Neeley Family Distillery. It was then finished for 14 months in a French Chateau Rieussec Sauternes barrel (Revival Vintage Bottle Shop pick)

Tasting Notes – The Old Jett Brothers Finished Bourbons

I picked up two of these bottles. Let’s taste them:

Rested for 15 minutes in Glencairns

The Old Jett Brothers Wheated Bourbon finished for 14 months in a French Chateau Rieussec Sauternes Barrel

This one is full of apricot, caramel, vanilla, honey and oak with subtle milk chocolate in the nose; there’s noticeable alcohol; The flavors continue throughout the taste, with bit of barrel char and quite a bit of white and black pepper spice and some dryness building in the finish. There’s plenty of lingering warmth. (114 proof)

The Old Jett Brothers High Rye Bourbon finished for 7 months in a French Oak Cognac Barrel

There’s sweet cornbread, vanilla & caramel in the nose; the cognac melds remarkably well with this bourbon’s flavors, complimenting them in every way. There’s quite a bit of honey and sweetness which continues throughout. Alcohol is relatively mild in the nose. The same flavors and sweetness continue into the taste. The finish still has lingering sweetness, but oak, white pepper spice and char increase throughout, reaching moderate strength. There is again a pleasant warmth. (109.9 proof)

These bourbons are night and day different. I have enjoyed many, many of Royce’s bourbons, and therefore have a very good base reference for what flavor profiles to expect. The Cognac Cask Finish intensifies the bourbon’s own flavors, with its own flavor almost seamlessly blending in. Whereas the Sauternes Cask Finish seemed to have a somewhat more profound effect on the bourbon’s flavor. Aside from Cognac and Sauternes being quite different, the bourbon was finished twice as long in the Sauternes barrel than in the Cognac barrel, so that could play a part as well.
