The Blueprint Whiskey Series features historic blueprints recovered from the once abandoned Old Steelhouse (T.W. Samuels) Distillery.
Blueprint Sheet 1
Blueprint Bourbon is the first release from the Old Steelhouse Distillery. Haven’t heard of them? Well, as it just so happens, we have a nice write up about the Old Steelhouse Distillery on BourbonObsessed.com in the Distillery Reviews section! But, long story short, before its current iteration, this distillery was previously known as the T.W. Samuels Distillery. Yes, that’s the same Samuels family that brings us Maker’s Mark bourbon today!
This inaugural Blueprint Bourbon release from Old Steelhouse Distillery is distilled in Indiana, and has a mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley. According to Coming Whiskey on Instagram (@comingwhiskey), Blueprint Bourbon is a 17 barrel blend from MGP. He says that it is aged for one year in Indiana and 5 years in Dayton, OH.
Tasting Notes – Blueprint Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
Nose: Sweet, with caramel, cherry, rye spices (mainly clove) & a bit of toast and subtle oak; moderate alcohol
Taste: Sweet; caramel, with a little bit of a tang, maybe from dried apricot, and some dry oak. Spice appears later and increases
Finish: Sweetness continues into the finish but the capsaicin spice continues to grow; there’s also the lingering apricot tang. Some barrel char and dry oak join in towards the end as well. The finish is fairly long with a moderate burn.
The nose is noticeably sweet, bringing thick simple syrup with maybe just a little honey. It is nicely contrasted by the rye spices, which are mainly cloves. Then some cherry and rich caramel top it off. Similar flavors continue into the taste but change character a bit as time goes on. Things start to get a bit tangy, perhaps from dried apricots, and there’s plenty of spice as we head into the finish.
Summary
While many MGP bourbons have some similarities, they have their differences, too. This one is not quite like any other that I have had, and I like it. If you are a fan of this flavor profile, then definitely give Blueprint Bourbon a try! Cheers!
