Silver Grove is New Riff’s First Barrel Proof Blend
Silver Grove is a new bourbon from New Riff Distilling! It’s their first ever blend that was bottled at barrel strength. Up to now, only their single barrels were bottled at barrel strength. Everything else was Bottled In Bond, and therefore 100 proof. Silver Grove Bourbon also has a unique mash bill of 65% corn, 30% malted rye and 5% malted barley, giving it some unique flavor characteristics.
What is Silver Grove?
You may be wondering why the name “Silver Grove”? Is it the birthplace of New Riff? A 50’s TV show? Something else? Well, New Riff Distilling is in Newport, Kentucky, and there was never (that I know of) a TV show of that name, so the answer is, it is something else. Two things, in fact. Silver Grove, Kentucky is where New Riff is building a new barrel warehouse. In fact, a percentage of the proceeds from the bottle sales will be donated to the Silver Grove Community Foundation. In addition, Silver Grove was the name of a Prohibition era medicinal whiskey. Edward H. Brinkman distilled that version in Cincinnati in 1917, and George T. Stagg Distillery bottled it in 1933.
Tasting Notes – New Riff Silver Grove Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
Nose: Dark cherry, sweet cherry candy, dried apricot, pear; gentle leather; burnt caramel becomes more noticeable as I acclimate; brown sugar, too; subdued rye spices; hint of cinnamon; subtle oak and char in the background; noticeable alcohol
Taste: Sweet, like cherry candy sweet; in later sips, I notice much more caramel and some honey and brown sugar and sweetness is reduced; the spice appears quickly…
Finish: … and continues to rise into the finish; it’s a white pepper spice, with some dry oak and barrel char; the cherry becomes tart; much later on there is a wintergreen cooling effect and with some dried apricot sitting right in the middle of my tongue; moderate burn; long finish.
What’s With All That Fruit?
Where is all that fruit coming from? Must be at least in part due to the malted rye, which tends to add very different flavors than the more commonly used unmalted variety. But the sweetness does not last. It is very rapidly replaced by spice in the taste, which then dominates the relatively dry finish. The fruit that remains takes on a tangy note. This Silver Grove Bourbon is truly like no other New Riff bourbon that I have had. When I look back on my notes about their 6 Year Malted Rye, I had made note of some similar fruit flavors, as well as similar spiciness and dryness in the finish. So there you go!
Overall, I like this bourbon quite a bit. Due to its unique flavor profile, it is definitely one to have when you are in the mood for something a bit different. Have you tried the New Riff Silver Grove Bourbon? I’m interested to know what you think! Cheers!
