Heaven Hill introduced this line of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Bourbons in decorative decanters in 2018. They are delicious bourbons, and have become highly sought after.

Old Fitzgerald Decanters Make A Comeback in 2018

Heaven Hill Distillery began releasing the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon decanters in the Spring of 2018. When the Old Fitz decanters were first announced, as I remember it, there were supposed to be two releases per year; a Spring release and a Fall release. The releases were supposed to happen for 3 years. However, these decanters proved quite popular. Therefore, the releases continued past the three year mark, with the most recent, and potentially the last, being the Fall of 2022. At this point, their future is uncertain, other than to maybe a few insiders at Heaven Hill.

Spring and Fall Bourbons Have Different Label Colors

The Spring releases have green labels, and the Fall releases have black labels. So you might be wondering what this maroon labelled one is? To make it more challenging, Heaven Hill added a 3rd, “Special Release” many of the years. This 14 year old Old Fitzgerald Botted-In-Bond Bourbon was the first of those and was released in 2018.

Old Fitzgerald Bourbon Has A Long History

The Old Fitzgerald brand has a long history. It was purportedly originally trademarked back in 1884. At one time, the Old Fitzgerald brand was owned by Stitzel-Weller. Beginning in 1951, they released Old Fitzgerald Bourbon in elegant decanters. Heaven Hill acquired the Old Fitz brand, along with many others, in 1999 when they purchased the Bernheim Distillery from Diageo.

Old Fitzgerald is a wheated bourbon, meaning it uses wheat, instead of the more commonly used rye, as the secondary grain. Corn is the primary grain in bourbon, and it must make up at least 50% of the mash bill. The remainder of the grains used can pretty much be anything, but are usually either wheat or rye, and a small percentage of malted barley. All of the bourbons in the decanter series are Bottled-in-Bond.

Tasting Notes – Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon Review (Decanter)

The nose brings pleasant, but quite noticeable, oak, honey sweetness, caramel, light sweet delicious apples and perhaps notes of raspberry jam. The taste is rich with caramel, and fairly sweet with brown sugar and light honey. There are continuing light fruit notes, and of course, some oak. The finish is very long, with lingering oak, a mild sweetness and a noticeable, but appropriate, black and white pepper burn. There’s no astringency from barrel char, and the oak level is perfect, at least for my tastes. Oak is definitely present, but not overbearing at all.

I have been a big fan of this series since the beginning. Originally, these Old Fitzgerald Decanters were not actually a huge challenge to get, although that has certainly changed today. Nonetheless, they are still worth the effort to obtain, if you are a fan of well aged, wheated bourbons. I have enjoyed all of the ones that I have tried.

Have you had the opportunity to sample any of the Old Fitzgerald decanters? Are you a fan?

PS. This is only the second time I have used this glass. It’s made by Glencairn Crystal and is their version of a Copita. So far, I am loving it! Have you tried anything from Glencairn Crystal other than their standard Glencairn Glass? I hadn’t until very recently.
